You’ve met your firm offer

Your grades are better than expected
If you’ve outperformed your predicted grades and exceeded your firm offer conditions, UCAS Adjustment lets you explore other courses or universities for a short, time-limited window after results day, while still holding onto your original confirmed place as a safety net.
For UAE families, there are a few extra layers to plan around: the time difference, and the fact that some strong options don’t require going through UCAS at all.
What is UCAS Clearing, exactly?
Clearing is UCAS’s system for matching students without a confirmed place to university courses that still have vacancies. For the 2026 cycle it runs from 2 July to 19 October, though the volume of available courses is highest immediately after results day. You can only add a Clearing choice from 1:00pm UK time, which is 5:00pm UAE time, on 13 August, after you’ve had time to check your results first.
What is UCAS Adjustment, and is it worth using?
Adjustment is only relevant if your results significantly exceed both your firm and insurance offer conditions. It gives you a five-working-day window from results day, until 19 August 2026 this cycle, to contact other universities about a stronger course, while your original firm offer stays held as a safety net throughout. If you don’t find anything better, your original place remains secure.
Applying directly to UK university campuses in the UAE
Several UK universities, including Heriot-Watt, Middlesex, and the University of Birmingham, run branch campuses in Dubai with their own direct admissions processes, separate from UCAS. If your UCAS outcome isn’t what you hoped for, applying directly to one of these campuses can be a faster route to a recognised UK degree without leaving the region.
How the UAE time difference affects your results-day plan
The UAE is four hours ahead of the UK in August. That means Cambridge International results land locally at 10:00am, UCAS Hub updates on 13 August from around midday UAE time, and Clearing choices open in the UAE afternoon rather than the UK morning. If a grade looks wrong, your school can submit an Enquiry About Results on your behalf. Deadlines are tight, typically only a few weeks after results day, and it’s worth knowing that a grade can go down as well as up on review, so discuss the decision with your school before requesting one.
Resitting your A-Levels
Cambridge International and Edexcel IAL both offer resit series later in the academic year, so a disappointing grade doesn’t necessarily mean waiting a full year. Targeted, focused tutoring on the specific modules or papers that cost you marks is usually far more efficient than repeating an entire course from scratch.
Taking a gap year and reapplying
Reapplying to university with your actual, achieved grades removes the uncertainty of predicted grades altogether, and a well-used gap year can combine a resit, relevant work experience, or both.
